Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Good morning! We started this hike at 0600 am in hopes to miss most of the people and make the most of the gorgeous day. We did have to wait for a couple days before we could hike it because it is completely exposed. This was looking back from where we had come...it's hard to capture the contrasting lights.

Love the bush along side the trail. It's a bit frost tipped.
Which way to go?

This is the most sheltered area, where the wind was the almost nil. The shine you see is actually frozen ground. Later that day, it was quite muddy.

Some of the first people we met on the trail....getting closer to the summit.

Emerald lakes and Blue lake in the distance. So gorgeous! It was also so windy at the top! Crazy, I almost felt like it was going to blow us off.

These people trying to recover from the wind blowing dirt/ash into their eyes.
Holly loving the scenery! The ground was warm from the volcano, so not too cold even with the wind.
Red Crater, the active part of the volcano.

Another Mtn close by. Sorry folks, I don't remember the name.

Walking down through the lava fields.

Right?! Isn't the view just awesome?! :)

Yes, Okay! I know I look like an eskimo with all the layers, but it was a bit chilly out! :)

Near the end....a view of another mountain. I was loving them.
